Luxury Birding at
Hacienda de los Santos, Alamos
If your idea of birding includes luxurious accommodations and fine dining, please join High Lonesome BirdTours at Hacienda de los Santos for a Luxury Birding Experience.
Our friends at High Lonesome BirdTours have been bringing groups to Alamos since 2002—and their clients have been delighted with the experience! Not only do they stay at a world-class hotel (that would be us), but they’ve also arranged with a number of very small, very private gourmet restaurants around town (including ours!) to provide an unforgettable dining experience for their guests—and don’t get us started on the birds!
Alamos lies at the northernmost boundary of a tropical deciduous forest that extends all the way to Costa Rica; sadly, this most of this unique habitat has been destroyed, but the area around our hotel maintains the largest intact portion. Many endemic birds, such as Elegant Quail, Russet-crowned Motmot, Purplish-backed Jay, Black-throated Magpie Jay, Sinaloa Wren, and Happy Wren, make their homes in this habitat. Part of the tour also includes a visit to the charming seaside town of San Carlos where you will see Blue- and Brown-footed Boobies, Costa’s Hummingbirds and much more right outside your window.
For more details on this amazing birding experience, please visit the High Lonesome BirdTours’ webpage.

287th Annual Music Festival
Music is an outburst of the soul. ~Frederick Delius
Alamos comes alive to the sound of music during the annual Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, a week-long festival held in January. The event, which is celebrated throughout the state of Sonora, began in 1985 and is named after the most famous male opera singer in Mexico, a native of Alamos. This is a world-class event, sponsored by the state and federal governments. Thanks to their efforts, musicians, dancers and performers from North and South America, Cuba and Europe descend on this sleepy Sonoran village.
Opera, chamber music, jazz and more mix in with the Latin strains of salsa, merengue and danzón. Street performances include dance and theater. Sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints and installation art put in an appearance. Artistic workshops, conferences and book presentations are available to the general public. It’s a magical coming together of creativity and soul—the perfect time to visit Alamos!
Click here for the event schedule from the Festival website (note: as of this posting, the website had yet to be updated. However, keep checking back as we’re sure they will post 2011 events soon!)
